Shopware 6: scheduled tasks without a CLI worker or the admin worker

A free plugin and a cronjob at Cronjob.de do what Shopware otherwise needs a worker on the server or an open administration for. Set up in a few minutes, without SSH.

Why Shopware 6 needs a nudge from outside

Shopware 6 does a lot in the background: sitemap, search index, clean-up, newsletters and everything plugins register for it. Out of the box the admin worker handles this – but only while someone has the administration open. At night and at weekends the work piles up.

Shopware therefore recommends switching off the admin worker and keeping scheduled-task:run and messenger:consume running on the server. That needs SSH and a process that runs all the time – many hosting plans do not offer that.

Set up in three steps

  1. 1

    Upload the plugin

In the administration go to Extensions → My extensions → Upload extension, choose the ZIP file, then install and activate it.

  2. 2

    Open the connection link

The plugin configuration shows a connection link. Copy it and open it in your browser.

  3. 3

    Save at Cronjob.de

Log in or create a free account – after activation you are taken straight on. The form is already filled in: your shop's address, every 5 minutes. Save, done.

As soon as the calls arrive, the plugin switches off the admin worker. Each call queues the due scheduled tasks and works through the message queue. The Cronjob.de call log then shows, for example, OK: scheduled tasks queued, 2 messages handled.

What it costs

Plugin
Free, MIT licence.
Cronjob.de Free
A call every 5 minutes – free for good, no payment details.
Cronjob.de Plus
€17.88 a year: a call every minute, so the queue is worked through right away, and an email as soon as a call fails. All plans

Good to know

What happens on each call?
The plugin queues the due tasks and works through the message queue until it is empty – for 25 seconds at most. If the previous call is still running, the next one just reports “busy” and does nothing.
Is the address protected?
Yes, with a secret token the plugin creates on installation. Without it the address answers 403. You can change the token in the configuration at any time.
What if the calls stop?
Then the admin worker switches itself back on after 15 minutes. So the tasks never pile up for good – not even if the cronjob is deleted or the shop moves.
I have only just signed up – where is the form?
Normally it appears by itself after activation. If you opened the activation link in another browser or on another device, simply open the connection link from the plugin once more.
What data goes to Cronjob.de?
Only the address with the token. Cronjob.de calls it and stores the short reply. Orders, customers and other shop data never leave the shop.
Does it work without Cronjob.de?
Yes. The configuration also shows the address on its own – any cron service or your server's crontab can call it.
And Shopware 5?
Shopware 5 has its cron address /backend/cron built in, no plugin needed: Guide for Shopware 5.
