Setting up a Host Europe cronjob and when an external call is simpler

At Host Europe you set up cronjobs in the current WebHosting packages in cPanel under “Cron Jobs”, and on a WebServer in the KIS. In both cases you enter a command or a script on the server. You can only call an address there through a command such as curl or wget. With Cronjob.de you simply enter the address and click the schedule, without a command line.

Why at all

Your product decides the route

Current WebHosting packages (cPanel): According to the product details on hosteurope.de, the Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate and Maximum packages include cron jobs and SSH access (as of October 2026). You set them up in cPanel under “Cron Jobs”. You pick an interval from the presets or enter your own definition, and type a command into the command line field.

Older Classic Hosting packages: In Host Europe's package overview, the WebHosting packages Basic, Medium, Premium and Supreme are listed with “no” for cronjobs. In a blog post Host Europe points to an upgrade to WebServer or WebServer Dedicated for cronjobs. With Cronjob.de you do not need that upgrade, because only your address has to be reachable.

WebServer (KIS): The scheduler in the KIS starts program files on the server. According to the Host Europe FAQ, entering an address there is not possible. Beforehand a default sender for script emails and SSH access have to be set up. The script needs file permissions of 750 and a shebang line.

For tasks that run on the server anyway, such as backups or cleanup work, the Host Europe cronjob is the right route. WordPress, shops, Matomo and many other systems, however, expect an address to be called. For that, Cronjob.de is the shorter route: enter the address, click the schedule, done.

Step by step

The AI does it faster

You do not have to transfer any of this by hand. Paste this guide – or the one for your own system – into the assistant, and Cronjob.de fills in address, method, schedule and headers. Where something is unclear it asks instead of guessing. At the end you see what was entered and create the job with one click.

Included in the free plan at no extra cost. You will find it after signing in under "Cronjobs" → "Create with AI".

  1. First check which product you have

On a cPanel package you find the “Cron Jobs” category after logging into the cPanel administration. On a WebServer the cronjobs sit in the KIS under Produktverwaltung › WebServer › Konfigurieren › Skripte & Datenbanken › Cronjobs. On an older Classic WebHosting package there are no cronjobs, according to Host Europe. For the call from outside the product does not matter.

  2. Decide on the address and protect it

For the call from outside you need an address that starts your script and is reachable without a login. Protect it with a long random parameter that your script checks right at the start. If the script sits behind a directory protection, store the credentials (HTTP auth) at Cronjob.de.

  3. Create an account at Cronjob.de

Signing up is free and needs no payment details. New accounts get all features for 14 days, after that the account simply continues on the free plan.

  4. Create a cronjob with that address

Enter the address and click the schedule together. You can also describe the interval in one sentence, such as “every night at 3 am”, or paste your plugin's instructions. The AI assistant picks out the address, method and schedule.

    */5 * * * *

You can enter this expression at Cronjob.de exactly as it is – the schedule field understands crontab notation. But you do not have to know it: simply click the schedule together instead.

  5. Switch on error alerts

Enter an email address under Notifications. You will then hear about an outage even when your server is not answering at all. Failure notifications by email are included from Plus, and during the first 14 days.

  6. If you stay with Host Europe: calling by command

In cPanel you type a command into the command line field that calls the address. In the KIS this only works through a wrapper script, according to Host Europe: a file with a shebang and permissions 750 that does nothing but call your address.

    #!/bin/sh
    curl -Iso /dev/null "https://your-domain.com/your-script.php?key=A-LONG-SECRET"

What the five fields of an expression like */5 * * * * mean is explained in the crontab reference – with examples and the most common pitfalls. You can build the expression in the crontab generator. Whether you need an outside service at all is shown in the comparison of the three ways.

Verification

Is it actually running?

The Cronjob.de call log shows the time, runtime and status code of every call, and from Plus also your script's response. A permanent 401 or 403 means a directory protection is still in the way. A 404 means the address is wrong.

Your host runs cron jobs itself? Then monitor them with a heartbeat.

One line at the end of your script reports every run to Cronjob.de. If the check-in is missing, you get a message – even if the host's cron never started. One heartbeat is free. Cron job monitoring

FAQ

Common questions about Host Europe

Do the Host Europe WebHosting packages have cronjobs?
The current cPanel packages Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate and Maximum list cron jobs in their product details (as of October 2026). The older Classic packages WebHosting Basic to Supreme have none, according to Host Europe's package overview. A call from outside works with any package, because only your address has to be reachable.
Can I enter a URL as a cronjob at Host Europe?
Not directly. In the KIS entering an address is not possible according to the Host Europe FAQ; there you need a wrapper script with curl or wget. In cPanel you enter a command that calls the address. At Cronjob.de you enter the address directly.
Do I have to enable SSH for cronjobs at Host Europe?
For the cronjobs in the KIS of a WebServer, yes. According to Host Europe, SSH access has to be enabled under Produktverwaltung › WebServer › Konfigurieren › Sicherheit & SSL › SSH Zugang konfigurieren. For the call from outside you need no SSH access, because nothing is set up on the server.
Should I switch off the cronjob at Host Europe then?
If you would trigger the same task from both sides, yes. Otherwise two schedules run side by side and you can no longer tell which run came from where.
Is your server rejecting our calls? Error 403 almost always comes from a firewall, a security plugin or directory protection – not from your script. All our calls carry the fixed identifier Cronjob.de in the user agent. Ask your host for an exception for it; that is more reliable than allowing IP addresses, because ours can change. Addresses and details in the FAQ. Other errors such as 401, 404 or 500 are explained in the troubleshooting guide.
